The Gulf Coast Amateur Basketball Association will decide it's first-ever champion this weekend - Saturday, December 12, 2009 at 10:30 AM EST as the two top ranked teams battle it out for league supremacy. The teams, led by the leagues two top scorers, Michael Collier (Polk Community College) and Dave Gaulman (Southeastern University) recently defeated the 3rd and 4th ranked teams (Bradenton and Lakewood Ranch) decisively in their semi-final matchups.
Collier, a 6'6" power forward from Sarasota, FL led Team St. Pete to a 10-2 regular season record while Gaulman, a 6'5" shooting guard helped lead an under-sized Team Tampa to the leagues #2 seed after defeating St. Pete by two points on a last second shot in the leagues final regular season contest.
"This is an interesting matchup," said Jason Broom, a 6'9" small forward for Team Bradenton. "On paper, St. Pete looks like the obvious winner with their height advantage and number of scorers. Yet, Team Tampa continues to manage to win games with their scrappy play and 3 point shooting. I look forward to watching the game."
Details for the Championship Game are as follows: Date: Saturday, December 12, 2009 Time: 10:30 AM Cost: Free Location: Out of Door Academy (Lakewood Ranch), 5950 Deer Dr. Sarasota, FL 34240
The league will also host a post-game gathering at the World of Beer on University Avenue to celebrate the conclusion of it's first season. The GCABA has already become one of the nations premeir basketball leagues with it's combination of talent, organization, and use of technology.
"From a marketing and promotion standpoint, there's no other amateur basketball league in the world that does a better job of highlighting it's players," said Bill Jula, GCABA League Commissioner. "As we begin to work closely with local college and professional players that train here in the offseason, the league should become a magnet for top flight talent."
