The Gulf Coast Amateur Basketball Association (GCABA), the upstart Men's Basketball League located along the Florida Gulf Coast, will begin playoffs on Saturday, December 5, 2009 to determine it's first-ever league champion. Over six teams will compete in a single elimination tournament over three days with the championship game concluding on Saturday, December 12, 2009.
The league, which offers a highly competitive and organized environment for many of the areas premier players, launched in October 2009 with over 60 players from around the Tampa Bay area. Players were divided up among six teams according to ability. Each team competed in a 12-game regular season schedule as well as a mid-season All-Star game featuring the leagues best.
Throughout the season, extensive statistics were kept on each player including point average, steals, rebounds, blocks, assists, free throw percentage, 3 point field goal percentage, and more. Additionally, the league boasts a robust website complete with player profiles, streaming video, and action photos.
"I'm excited about how this first regular season turned out," said Bill Jula, GCABA Founder and League Commissioner. "It will be interesting to see which team emerges as the champion. Despite the regular season standings, it's really anyone's tournament to win."
GCABA Playoff games will be played at the Out of Door Academy Thunderdome in Lakewood Ranch.
