The Growth of MPLS VPNs
Is your business considering MPLS VPN technology?
Interest in MPLS VPNs has been growing rapidly in the business world recently. Businesses use multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) to create virtual private networks (VPNs) that provide traffic isolation and differentiation with little overhead. VPNs are configured within a public network so they can take advantage of the economies of scale and management facilities that large networks provide. They offer multipoint networks that run over an IP core, connecting the customer’s IP router to the provider’s IP router.
Why all the buzz?
Several businesses have been surveyed and overall satisfaction with MPLS VPNs is remarkably high. It is expected that MPLS VPNs will become standard in the market within the next year or two.
In a press release from Business Wire on May 13th, 2008, Dianne Hurley of the BRIAD Group—the largest TGI Friday’s restaurant operator—said, As a long time MegaPath customer, we look to the company’s Site-to-Site MPLS VPN service to deliver cost effective connectivity without sacrificing reliability or performance. MegaPath’s leading-edge service enables us to deploy the latest bandwidth intensive applications, which increase employee productivity and customer satisfaction. We have not seen any other secure connectivity solution that offers the value we receive from the MegaPath Site-to-Site MPLS VPN service.
As these remarks show, there has been a lot of buzz going on about MPLS VPN service. However, as it goes with all new technologies, there is room for improvement. A few of the problems that companies have reported in surveys deal with installations taking too long, billing mistakes, and customer service. Supplier call centers and customer service representatives scored high for the most part, but the representatives’ level of expertise did not score as high. Problems such as these are expected with any new technology entering a changing market. However, as these companies continue to progress, it is expected that these glitches will be fixed and service will improve even more with MPLS VPN technology.
