Date Released: 09/23/2009
Press Release Image Today many of us work at computers, sitting at desk several hours a day or we are driving in our cars and trucks for a living. Usually our seats are not very comfortable and do not put us in a very good position to work without pain. As we sit all day our quadriceps, the front of our thighs shorten, then when we lie down at night our legs will begin to jump. The reason is the muscles are short and when you lie down you stretch them out, creating a spasm. The back of your legs are in an elongated state while sitting, this will put tremendous tension on your back causing low back pain. Also sitting for long periods of time puts pressure on your hips which will squeezed the nerves running down your legs leading to restless leg or sciatica. Your knees can began to hurt from the same tension applied to the hips. Finally, by sitting for long periods of time, your calf muscles will tighten causing problems like plantar fasciitis, pins and needles in your heels. The American Association of Orthopedic Surgeons states that almost $9 million in workers’ compensation costs are related to back pain and result in over 100 million lost workdays per year. The Bureau of Labor Statistics says that jobs requiring sitting behind a desk, management, business and financial professionals, installation, repair, and maintenance are in the top 10 occupations with the most back injuries. Dr Andrew Block recommends the following tips for long days at the office. 1. Proper Posture- Sit properly; posture is imperative for people who sit at a desk all day. Sitting improperly can add stress to your spine and back muscles. 2. Stretch- Get up and stretch throughout the day. Moving can keep muscles from getting stiff and fatigued. 3. Exercise- Stay fit. Maintaining strong core muscles can help ease the stress on your back. By gaining weight, your back muscles must support the additional load. 4. Drive Time- While commuting, move the seat forward so your knees are level with your hips. Don’t get so close to the steering wheel that you can’t turn it easily.

“Whether you are at home, at work, or at ply, it’s a 24 hour-a-day job that only we can control,” according to Dr Block.
