PRESS: Our Healthcare System is Not Broken

No healthcare system will work successfully until the people understand their role for optimum health.
Date Released: 07/27/2009
Press Release Image Our healthcare system is running exactly the way we, the people, have asked it to run. We want to eat badly and live an unhealthy lifestyle, but also be free of diseases. That just cannot happen! The real problem lies in our understanding of what our bodies need. Most people understand the basic mechanics of their automobile better than the needs of their body. For instance, you know your car has to have a certain grade of gasoline or it will sputter and not run very well. You also know that if you do not change your oil on a regular basis, as prescribed by the manufacturer, your engine will seize up and no longer perform. How do we know this? Car manufacturers and auto mechanics tell us on a continuous basis what will happen. Our creator tries to show us through pain and death, plus our doctors are telling us the consequences of our lifestyle, but we refuse to listen. Unlike car manufacturers, our creator and doctors are fighting against Madison Ave advertising which is continually enticing us to buy their products. What makes it worse is we choose to not listen to our bodies, or our doctors, and listen to corporations trying to make a buck. Now I am not faulting the corporations, they are entitled to make a profit, but I am faulting us for not learning about how to live happier and healthier. Our healthcare system, as we know it, cannot administer healthcare to the people who are diseased today. There are too many sick people. If you look at the rise in obesity in America, on a graph, and also draw lines to correlate the rise in heart disease, high blood pressure, strokes, cancer, and high cholesterol you would see very similar rises in each, during the same period of time. So what are we missing? We are missing better nutritional information to help us learn that some of the foods we thought were good for us, are not really so good for us. We need better information on strength training, stretching, massage therapy, stress reduction, acupuncture, and time management. So many things are blamed on genetics. Once we hear the term, “genetic”, we take a position of defeat. In fact, knowing that you are genetically prone for something, should be looked at as a positive, so you can change your lifestyle and eating habits to avoid the consequences. For instance, if your family has a history of heart disease and you continue to eat and live the same way they did, you will get the same results. Wouldn’t common sense kick in and say, “I don’t want to end up like them, so I am not going to live and eat like they did.” Yet we continue to follow the same path as if it there is nothing we can do about it. Then act surprised when we get the same disease! I am not blaming mom or dad, or even grandma or grandpa. They didn’t know what we know today and they taught you what they knew. Now you know better and what are you going to do about it? The new proposed healthcare system will not work either. I see the same problem persisting no matter which way we choose. We still are not educating the masses about good nutrition and proper exercise, stretching, and massage therapy. So if the masses don’t understand their role in reducing healthcare costs, how on earth can we believe that healthcare costs can go down. We now have 3.6 hospital beds for every 1,000 people , so we will have to build many more hospitals. Insurance companies will have to raise their rates as more and more sick people will have to be attended to in the hospitals. Pharmaceutical companies will have to raise their prices, as the research will be needed to try and combat the diseases we create. Our government costs will rise as medical schools will need help in recruiting more young people to be doctors and nurses, and people will need help to cover the costs of education. So you see, we are back to the same place as we are now, only further in debt as a nation. The only answer I see is better education on nutrition and lifestyle. People need to be willing to change for themselves and the country. How do we do that? Let’s start in our schools. Every student from kindergarten to 12th grade should be required to study nutrition. We should teach them how to prepare and cook food. These programs should be supported by organizations and companies that promote proper nutrition. We cannot allow companies and organizations that sell fast foods, drugs, and anything else that is counterproductive to support teaching our children how to eat food which will keep them healthy. Every student should be required to have 1 hour of physical education everyday to learn strength training, correct stretching, and cardiovascular exercises. We need better public announcements on nutrition and healthy living. We need much tougher requirements for personal trainers in gyms; more education in our medical schools and physical therapy schools on proper nutrition and the importance of correct stretching for better joint health, blood flow, nerve reactions, and organ functioning. Getting more and more people, including seniors, in healthy lifestyle programs instead of just passing out pills, giving injections, or giving out braces will cost less. Medical facilities will need to take more time with patients to teach them how to live a healthier life, which will lessen their profitability, but will reduce our overall healthcare costs. For America to become more healthy physically, as well as financially, we all have to make big changes in the way we think about health, from the President to every man, woman, and child. If we do not, I believe we will see a decline in our population and the bankruptcy of our government. We must push ourselves to make better choices on what we eat and how we treat our bodies. Our healthcare is the responsibility of each and every one of us. We can no longer wait for someone else to fix our mistakes. We’ve tried and it didn’t work. Are we going to do it again, at a higher cost? Albert Einstein once said, “ the definition of insanity is to continue doing the same thing over and over, while each time hoping for a different result.”
