Fresno, California (June 6, 2009) - While many American and European breast augmentation surgeons report that their patients are scaling back on the size of implants they choose, Fresno breast augmentation cosmetic surgeon Dr. Robert Yoho (www.dryoho.com) says the majority of his patients are actually choosing to go larger than the average sizes in years past. Dr. Yoho, whose implant options cover the full range from smaller to very large, attributes this change to new techniques that allow for results that look natural, even with larger implants.
"The reality is that most breast augmentation patients want their breasts to be subtly – but definitely – larger," Dr. Yoho explains. "Ten or 20 years ago, women considering breast augmentation in Fresno often had to choose between a larger and possibly less natural look, or a smaller implant size that might not necessarily meet their personal size goals. Today's techniques allow surgeons more flexibility to use implants larger than the 'average' 350cc range, while still creating a balanced and natural appearance."
As Dr. Yoho explains, the actual volume of the implant is only one of the criteria that determine how "large" a woman's breasts will appear after surgery. The patient's amount of existing breast tissue, the width of her breast implants' "base," the extent to which the implants project forward from her chest, and even the position of the implants in relation to her muscles and breast tissue all play a role in the apparent size of her new breasts.
"In the past more women would choose a smaller size because they were worried their breasts would look 'too large,'" Dr. Yoho says. "Today, I think women are more aware of the new techniques and implant options that allow Fresno cosmetic surgery patients and surgeons more options in planning their procedures. Many of my patients today know they have more choices than just breast volume, and they are more aware that a good surgeon can adapt variables like implant projection to allow for larger-volume breasts that still look proportional and natural."
Newer, more sophisticated designs for both silicone gel and saline-filled implants come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and projections, and can be placed fully above or below the chest muscle, or to varying degrees partially behind it, allowing the surgeon to sculpt the final breast shape very precisely. However, Dr. Yoho warns that not all surgeons have the skills or inclination to adapt their procedures fully to their patients' needs.
"The 'right' implant choice always depends on unique factors like height and fitness level, so at my Fresno area cosmetic surgery practice, I spend a fair amount of time with each patient planning how to adjust the different variables to make sure her results look appealing. A larger breast size can play an important role in a woman's self-image, so it is extremely important for patients to find a surgeon who is willing to adapt his or her techniques to what the patient wants and needs."
