Many older people dote on their pets and would be lost and lonely without them. Dogs, cats and birds are the preferred pets for seniors, but once older people begin to lose their mobility, they need to be careful around pets. Cats have a terrible habit of rubbing against their favourite human's legs. This can easily trip up a person who has become frail and cause a nasty fall. Little dogs - and even big ones - can jump up unexpectedly and cause an older person to lose their balance.
If a dog is young or in its prime, it requires exercise that may be too much for an older person to cope with, dog breeders should be able to help pick a suitable breed. This problem can be solved if there is a younger person available to take the dog for walks. This could be a young relative or friend that lives nearby, or someone hired for the job. Some breeds of dog don't require much exercise and are happy just running around the back yard.
A semi-wild animal such as birds or bush creatures can often make a good pet for a senior. Food and water can be offered and the person can have the pleasure of sitting and watching them, without the bother of actually caring for them. A birdbath and food tray is all that's required to bring many wild birds around the home.
