A locksmith is a tradesman who evaluates security in a wide range of applications. He will not necessarily design new locks, but will certainly install the most secure locking system for his clients needs. To become a locksmith, you will need to become apprenticed to a qualified locksmith who will train you. Going to TAFE for training is also required.
Although some areas find they have a shortage of locksmiths, in most places the opportunities for this type of job are limited. Job turnover is low and growth is predicted to be slow. The normal time for an apprenticeship is four years. During this time you will go to TAFE for some days of the week and get on-the-job training at your place of work, in the same way as a mechanic would.
As a locksmith you will be required to work with security systems, but evaluating needs for security systems is just as important. You will learn how to install, adjust, and repair all kinds of security systems, not just locks. You will also need to learn how to maintain them. The areas you will work in may depend on your employer; however, the main areas that need security include automotive, residential, commercial and institutional sectors.
