When you go to the dentist it's usually to get your teeth checked for decay or have them filled. But as far as the dentist is concerned there is a lot more to it. You may not realise it, but your dentist will also check your mouth for signs of oral cancer, especially if you smoke. Oral cancer is certainly not good news, but if it is found in the early stages it is highly curable, so why wait?
Gum disease such as gingivitis is also a possible result of neglecting your oral health. Mostly you will have painful and/or bleeding gums if you have gingivitis, but sometimes there are no symptoms. This disease can cause all your teeth to fall out and affect the bones in the gum as well if it is left untreated. Prevention is quite simple - simply having regular dentists check-ups and dental cleaning will do the trick.
Cavities - or decay - is caused by plaque, that sticky white substance we often feel on our teeth. Brushing twice a day will prevent the build-up that turns plaque into tartar; something that only a dentist can remove. Bad breath is nearly always the result of dental problems and should not be masked with a mouthwash. Treatment by the dentist is the only cure.
