Being a dentist can be a rewarding and fulfilling career. You have the satisfaction of knowing that you can help people while at the same time you will be able to choose the location of your work - anywhere from the city to rural districts. You will be able to set up your own practice, work with other dentists in a larger dental practice or even work in a hospital. Or you may want to go overseas and help those that are less fortunate with their dental problems.
To become a dentist: -
- First try to get some work experience in a dental surgery to make sure you would really like it. - If you do, then you'll need to make sure you get good grades in science and mathematics. - Apply to the right university in your state. Not all run the right courses for dentistry. You will have to become an undergraduate at university before going on to dental school. - Academic training to become a dentist takes five years. - Major universities of Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Western Australia and Queensland offer dental degree courses for future dentists.
Once you are qualified as a dentist you may wish to specialise in fields such as periodontics, orthodontics, paediatric dentistry, endodontics, prosthodontics or oral and maxillofacial surgery. This will require several more years of further training.
